Citing Yvonne Szeto’s “beautiful and elegant” design, the Kansas chapter of the American Institute of Architects has recognized the transformative project with an Excellence in Design award.
Two phases of renovations, with the second completed last year, have reinvented the museum’s formerly dark and disorienting galleries as luminous exhibition spaces. Expanded and revitalized study centers, teaching spaces, and galleries—enlivened with new connections inside and out—strengthen SMA’s standing as a hub for community engagement and international research. The design provides state-of-the-art facilities for conservation of and access to the museum’s significant collection of more than 48,000 objects.
